Bible Timeline: From Creation to the Early Church

How to read the timeline

Tap an era at the top. Each event has a traditional date, a two-sentence summary, and a link to the passage. Read the summary, then the passage — the Bible's own telling is always better than ours. If you're new to the story, start with "Life of Jesus" and work backward; that's the order most of us actually learned it.

The seven eras

  1. Creation & Patriarchs — Genesis: Adam to Joseph.
  2. Exodus & Wilderness — Moses, Passover, Sinai.
  3. Conquest & Judges — Joshua, Deborah, Gideon, Samson, Ruth.
  4. United & Divided Kingdom — Saul, David, Solomon, the prophets.
  5. Exile & Return — Babylon, Daniel, Esther, Ezra, Nehemiah.
  6. Life of Jesus — birth, ministry, cross, resurrection.
  7. Early Church — Pentecost, Paul, the letters, Revelation.

Why the big story matters for moms

It's easy to read the Bible as a bag of individual verses. The timeline reminds you that every promise you lean on — Jeremiah 29:11, Romans 8:28 — sits inside one long story of a God who keeps showing up for His people. For the center of that story, read The True Meaning of Easter and What John 3:16 Really Means.

Questions moms ask

Are the dates on the Bible Timeline exact?
No. Dates before about 1000 BC are traditional approximations (the older ones follow the classic Ussher-style chronology many study Bibles print), and scholars disagree widely, especially on Creation, the Flood, and the Exodus. The sequence of events is what the timeline is for; treat the years as a rough map, not a ruler.
Why does it start with Creation at about 4000 BC?
That figure comes from adding up the genealogies in Genesis, which is how traditional Bible timelines have been built for centuries. Many Christians read Genesis 1–11 differently and would not assign a date at all. We keep the traditional number so the timeline matches what most printed study aids show, and we flag it as approximate.
Does every event link to the Bible?
Yes. Each entry has a reference that opens the passage on BibleGateway, so you can read the actual story rather than our summary of it.
Can I use this to teach my kids?
That's the best use. Pick one era a week, read two or three events together, and ask your child to retell the story in their own words. Pair it with the Bible Quiz for a review game.
